What does Academic Mentoring look like?
There are 4 main components of Academic Mentoring at Aorere College
1. Weekly academic reflection/tracking
On Mondays in Academic Mentoring Time, students take the time to track their NCEA credits and make a one sentence review comment on their academic undertakings in each subject. This is reflected on in light of their goals for the term or for the year.
2. Formal Academic Interviews
These are one-on-one conversations between the student and myself, the Academic Mentor, which take place each term. In these interviews, students should assess how they are progressing in each subject, set goals, reflect and check attendance and credits (where applicable). These interviews are an important step in the tracking of learning and self-reflection on the academic progress they are making across their subjects.
3. Informal Academic Conversations
Students are welcome at any time during AMT (or at any time) to check their NCEA and attendance statistics with me, as well as ask questions around NCEA, discuss their subjects, or address other concerns.
4. Parent-Student-Mentor (PSM) Conferences
These will take place twice during the year and they will involve myself as the Academic Mentor, student and parent/caregiver participating in a 20 minute discussion regarding the student’s Personal Learning Pathway (PLP) and academic achievement to-date. This will not only help parents/caregivers to understand where their child is academically placed, but it will also open communication between school and home.
